Be a Decision-maker: Take Advantage of National Healthcare Decisions Day
Posted in Estate Planning

April 16 marks the fourth annual National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), which encourages individuals to connect with the healthcare community and attorneys to discuss advance directives and advance care planning. Events throughout both Indianapolis and the nation are planned to empower individuals to consider their end-of-life preparations, such as the creation of a living will, naming a durable power of attorney and  thinking about particular medical treatments – and is not just for those who are further along in their years or facing illness.

It does take coordination to make sure that the key players involved in an individual’s advance directive planning understand the plan and are aware that there is a plan in place. One study conducted by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality noted “between 65 and 76 percent of physicians whose patients had an advance directive were not aware that it existed.” This can be an alarming realization when it comes to your end-of-life wishes – and the empowering news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. Healthcare providers, children, spouses, and even friends need to be informed, and an attorney can help pull the pieces of this puzzle together.

Franciscan St. Francis Health will host an informational booth, staffed by healthcare professionals and attorneys, to address questions about advance directives and to help individuals complete their advance directives.  The booth will be available to the public at Monument Circle on April 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at IUPUI on April 16 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. It is important to consider the healthcare decisions you or your family and friends will eventually face. The attorneys within the Estate Planning Practice Group at Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP stand ready to help you plan your advance directives and end-of-life wishes.
