Breaking Up Is Hard to Do: Issues Surrounding Employee Termination

On Wednesday, April 27, Bingham Greenebaum Doll’s Labor and Employment Practice Group (LEPG) presented Breaking Up is Hard to Do: Issues Surrounding Employee Termination as part of its regular Lunch and Learn Series. The presentation dealt with the employee termination process.  Attendees and LEPG members engaged in an interactive discussion about making the decision to terminate, how to terminate, planning ahead for what comes next, and severance and release issues. Much of the discussion centered around best practices and documentation. Documentation is crucial in termination because it provides employers with written proof should the former employee decide to sue.  Attendees also discussed unemployment compensation and when employers should challenge a former employee’s application for unemployment compensation. Critical issues were highlighted by Bingham Greenebaum Doll attorney Casey Eckert, who discussed her experiences adjudicating unemployment benefits hearings for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The LEPG is dedicated to representing employers in all workplace legal matters. If you need any help or advice, please contact Labor and Employment Practice Group at Bingham Greenebaum Doll.
