Event Recap: 2016 BGD Legislative Conference

The impressive lineup of speakers, including 17 elected officials, and a robust agenda helped make this year’s conference the highest attended ever; thank you again to event sponsors Casino Association of Indiana, Inside INdiana Business, Raise it For Health and INGroup!

For 25 years, the event has offered first-hand information on the state’s hot topics from decision makers, community leaders, policy makers and engaged public servants from across Indiana just weeks before the Indiana General Assembly convenes. 2016 BGD LegCon Highlights

  • Presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin presented this year’s luncheon keynote address, "How Did We Get Here? A Historical Perspective on Our Wild 2016 Election."

  • Governor-elect Eric Holcomb addressed the conference and outlined legislative and policy priorities for his administration. He was warmly introduced by firm partner and election opponent John R. Gregg.

  • Our distinguished speakers list included 17 elected officials: Rep. Robert Behning, Rep. Brian C. Bosma, Sen. Ed Charbonneau, Rep. Bob Cherry, Mayor Scott Fadness, Rep. Randy Frye, Sen. Brandt Hershman (R), Curtis Hill, Eric Holcomb, Sen. Luke Kenley, Sen. Dennis Kruse, Sen. Tim Lanane, Sen. Jim Merritt, Rep. Scott Pelath, Rep. Greg Porter, Rep. Ed Soliday, and Sen. Karen Tallian.

  • Session topics included healthcare, economic development, education, ethics, budget, gaming, infrastructure, and local government.

  • Sawyer Knuteson was presented with the 2016 BGD Legislative Conference Scholarship for the benefit of the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

  • The Statehouse Press/Journalist Panel included Eric Berman, Dan Carden, Niki Kelly and Lesley Weidenbener, with Jim Shella moderating the session.

The Budget plenary session discussed the fiscal implications of major initiatives, including infrastructure and preschool for the next biennium and what we will likely see during the long session. The "Healthcare: The Opioid Addiction Crisis | Health Infrastructure | Tobacco Tax" session discussed the addiction problems plaguing Indiana, the state's health infrastructure, the chances of raising the tobacco tax, and more.
