Event Recap: 2017 BGD Legislative Conference

Thank you for being a part of the authoritative policy discussions on issues impacting life and business in Indiana during the 26th Annual BGD Legislative Conference at the Indiana Convention Center on Dec. 13, 2017.

The impressive lineup of speakers, including 17 elected officials, and a robust agenda helped make this year’s conference another premier event; thank you again to event sponsors Casino Association of Indiana, Inside INdiana Business, Indianapolis Bar Association and INGroup!

For 26 years, the event has offered first-hand information on the state’s hot topics from decision makers, community leaders, policy makers and engaged public servants from across Indiana just weeks before the Indiana General Assembly convenes. 2017 BGD LegCon Highlights
  • CNN Senior Political Analyst and former adviser to four U.S. Presidents David Gergen presented this year’s luncheon keynote address, "Eyewitness to Power: Leadership in America."
  • Governor Eric Holcomb addressed the conference and outlined legislative and policy priorities for his administration. He was warmly introduced by Rep. Holli Sullivan, Chair of the House Higher Education Subcommittee.
  • Our distinguished speakers list included 17 elected officials: Sen. Ron Alting, Sen. Eric Bassler, Rep. Brian Bosma, Rep. Dan Forestal, State Attorney General Curtis Hill, Governor Eric Holcomb, Sen. Travis Holdman, Rep. Cindy Kirchhofer, Sen. Tim Lanane, Rep. Linda Lawson, Rep. Kevin Mahan, Sen. Jim Merritt, Rep. Dave Ober, Sen. John Ruckelshaus, Rep. Ed Soliday, Rep. Holli Sullivan and Sen. Karen Tallian.

The 26th Annual BGD Legislative Conference kicked off with the Education & Workforce Development plenary which included Teresa Lubbers, Commissioner for Higher Education, Sen. Eric Bassler, Sue Ellsperman, Amanda McCammon, Blair Milo and Rep. Holli Sullivan.
Governor Eric Holcomb addressed the Conference and outlined legislative and policy priorities for his administration.
Sunday alcohol sales and marijuana legalization were just two of the topics discussed during the Public Policy panel with BGD’s Matt Price, Sen. Ron Alting, Sen. Karen Tallian, State Attorney General Curtis Hill and Alcohol Code Revision Commission Chairwoman, Beverly Gard.
BGD’s Grant Krevda, Rep. Cindy Kirchhofer, Pam Pontones, Brian Tabor and Allison Taylor discussed helping Hoosiers make healthier choices, HSAs, and more during the Health Care panel.
What makes a great leader? David Gergen, CNN Senior Political Analyst, gave seven lessons for the decision makers of today and tomorrow during his Keynote Luncheon Address.
The Infrastructure plenary welcomed: Michael Schmierer, Manager of Logistics and Postsecondary Programs, Conexus Indiana; Dennis Faulkenberg, President, APPIAN Advisors; Rep. Dan Forestal; Bob McCullouch, Program Manager, Purdue University LTAP; and Rep. Ed Soliday.
Abdul-Hakim Shabazz moderated the final session of the day on politics in sports featuring Gregg Doyel, Stephen Holder, Brandon Smith and Lesley Weidenbener.
