Indiana Service Challenge: BGD Women’s Forum prepares apartment at Coburn Place
Posted in General

On Monday, April 8, the Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP Women’s Forum prepared an apartment at Coburn Place Safe Haven for a family in need. Coburn Place, located in Indianapolis, provides women who have suffered from domestic violence and their children a chance at a fresh start by providing safe, affordable housing for up to two years. The members of the BGD Women’s Forum were honored and excited to make the apartment a home for this family, which includes a teenage girl and a young boy.

Through the generosity of the Women’s Forum and the attorneys at BGD, we were able to secure over $1,000 worth of donations for the apartment, including linens, toiletries, art, kitchenware, cleaning supplies, bottled water, food and more. Together with Kate Beatty, Kate Erdel, Meaghan Haller and Juli Plawecki, we stocked the kitchen with food, appliances and cookware; furnished bedrooms; hung pictures; set the kitchen table; supplied the bathrooms with shower curtains, towels, personal care items and other toiletries; and decorated the apartment to feel like home.

Decorating an apartment for Coburn Place was more than just a one-time volunteer opportunity, however. In December, BGD made a donation to Coburn Place that allowed the organization to purchase much-needed vacuum cleaners. You can read more about this donation in our previous blog post here.

The Women’s Forum also plans to submit this day of service to the Companies with a Mission 2013 Indiana Service Challenge. Companies with a Mission (CWAM) is a charitable organization that was founded to inspire a greater purpose in the workplace that challenges the way we work and encourages service. By submitting our service experience to the 2013 Indiana Service Challenge, we are competing with other organizations for a monetary prize between $2,000–$15,000 for Coburn Place.

We hope the mother and her children who move into their apartment feel safe and at home there, and we hope we are able give back to Coburn Place further through this year’s CWAM Challenge.
