Interview with Bailey Roese on the KDP

Bailey Roese may not be a native Kentuckian, but her commitment to community and social justice in the Commonwealth was apparent when she joined BGD in 2013.

Bailey earned her J.D. from William & Mary and focuses her practice on state and local tax issues. A 2015 graduate of Emerge Kentucky, a training program for women interested in public office, the experience drove her to become more involved in Kentucky politics. Recently named as General Counsel for the Kentucky Democratic Party, we asked her a few questions about her new role and the value of community service:

What does a General Counsel do?

KDP General Counsel’s main role is to advise the Party on internal matters and help ensure compliance with Kentucky’s campaign finance and election laws. I’m very honored to be able to serve the Party this year, especially with so many important elections coming up.

Are you involved with any other organizations in Louisville?

I am the President of the Board of Louisville Girls Leadership, a local non-profit dedicated to empowering high school girls in Jefferson County to develop their leadership skills, build meaningful relationships with girls across the city, and become effective advocates for the causes they care about.

How do you feel your work in Louisville and Kentucky have impacted your work at BGD?

Advocating for causes I believe in has in turn sharpened the skills I use to advocate on my clients’ behalf. I also feel an obligation to our clients to be informed about state and local issues and developments that may impact their businesses, and keeping up with politics and government helps ensure the advice I give is thorough and accurate. Last but not least, as a relatively-new Kentuckian, immersing myself in state and local organizations has enabled me to feel more connected to the work I do on behalf of the people, businesses, and non-profits of the Commonwealth.
