Recapping the 2018 BGD Legislative Conference

For 27 years, the event has offered first-hand information on the state’s hot topics from decision makers, community leaders, policy makers and engaged public servants from across Indiana just weeks before the Indiana General Assembly convenes. 2018 BGD LegCon Highlights
  • This year’s luncheon keynote panel, “Serving Indiana: Approaches to Effective Legislative Leadership in the New Era,” featured Congressman Jim Baird (R), Indiana State Senator J.D. Ford (D), Indiana State Representative Christy Stutzman (R), and Vanderburgh County Commissioner Jeff Hatfield (D) in a moderated conversation about approaches to effective leadership in the current political environment.
  • Governor Eric Holcomb addressed the conference and outlined legislative and policy priorities for his administration. He was warmly introduced by Toby McClamroch, Managing Partner of Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP.
  • Our distinguished speakers list included 25 elected officials: Congressman Jim Baird, Rep.   • Session topics included education and workforce development, gaming, local government, health care, ethics, Indiana’s biennial budget, commerce and economic development, agriculture and technology, utilities and infrastructure.

  • Jenna Jones was presented with the 2018 BGD Legislative Conference Scholarship for the benefit of the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
  • The Media Panel included Lindsey Erdody, Kaitlin Lange, Mary Beth Schneider, and Bob Kravitz, with Adam Wren moderating the session.

The 27th Annual BGD Legislative Conference kicked off with the Education & Workforce Development plenary session, which included Toby McClamroch, Sen. Jeff Raatz, PJ McGrew, Sen. Eddie Melton, Robert Enlow and Rep. Bob Behning.


Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb addressed the Conference and outlined legislative and policy priorities for his administration.


The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on legalized sports wagering, the potential for a new satellite casino and live table games at the racinos, tweaks to the wagering tax structure, and more was discussed during the Gaming panel with BGD’s Phil Sicuso moderating the panel comprised of: Matt Bell, Sen. Jon Ford, Executive Director of the Indiana Gaming Commission Sara Tait and Sportradar's Jake Williams.


BGD’s Brenda DeVries hosted the Local Government panel with Rep. Shane Lindauer, Huntingburg Mayor Denny Spinner, Scott Rudd and Brian Gould discussing the Governor’s recently announced Next Level Connections Plan.


BGD’s Joel Benson, Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box, Kevin Moore, City of Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, Brian Tabor and Rep. Steve Davisson discussed opioid abuse, addiction and mental health concerns in our state during the Health Care panel.


The Keynote Luncheon panel was kicked off with an introduction from BGD attorney Ali Miranda (pictured far right). The panel featured from left: Congressman Jim Baird (R), Indiana State Representative Christy Stutzman (R), Indiana State Senator J.D. Ford (D), and Vanderburgh County Commissioner Jeff Hatfield (D), with BGD partner Philip Sicuso moderating.


The Budget plenary session welcomed: moderator Jon Schwantes, Host of WFYI’s "Indiana Lawmakers;" Rep. Greg Porter, Ranking Minority Member, House Ways and Means Committee; Rep. Todd Huston, Co-Chair, House Ways and Means Committee; David Reynolds, Executive Director of Fiscal Policy, Indiana Senate Majority Caucus; Jason Dudich, Budget Director, State of Indiana; and Sen. Karen Tallian, Ranking Minority Member, Senate Appropriations Committee.
