Recent Development Regarding Use of Trademarks on Social Networking Websites

Facebook, Inc., owners of the popular social networking website Facebook, recently announced that users of the website will be allowed to create personalized URLs for their Facebook pages (i.e., name). There is a significant risk that some users of Facebook will incorporate registered trademarks into their personalized URLs, such as A Facebook user may then post inaccurate, misleading or inappropriate material in connection with the trademark.

Misuse of a registered trademark by a Facebook user may be countered by traditional means, but potential problems may be more easily avoided by taking preventive measures. Facebook, Inc. has created an online form for rights owners interested in preventing their trademarks from being registered as usernames by Facebook users. Trademark owners can reserve their trademark by submitting relevant information to Facebook, Inc. through their trademark protection contact form, available at Users will be allowed to create these URLs beginning Saturday, June 13 at 12:01 A.M. U.S. EDT, so trademark owners are advised to act quickly if they wish to reserve their registered marks.
