Roxana S. Bell Discusses the Benefits of Bar Association Membership with Indiana Lawyer

BGD attorney Roxana S. Bell recently discussed the shifting membership trends of local bar associations in Indiana Lawyer.  According to the publication, bar associations are working hard to welcome, attract and retain young professionals because this new group shows little inclination to joining. Bar associations, like associations in different industries, are seeing millennials shy away from being part of an organized group.

Bar association membership has been declining in recent years, but some local bar association leaders are using innovative methods to fill out their roster. A key to convincing them to be active in the organization is “the ask,” Bell said. Having a member invite them to a social function or to join a community service event gives the young lawyers the feeling that someone cares whether they show up.

In the article, Bell said that Marion County offers free membership to new members, and also pointed out that “getting the attorneys involved is essential.” Bell explained that once the new members see the personal and professional benefits, they are more likely to remain involved.

Roxana focuses her practice on labor and employment law in the areas of discrimination defense and general employment and workplace policies. She is also President of the Marion County Bar Association.
