Attorney Serves as Principal for a Day at Jasper High School

Earlier this month, Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP attorney William J. Kaiser Jr. had the chance to play a very different role than he usually does. Kaiser spent a day at Jasper High School serving as principal for the school’s Principal for a Day program.

Real Principal Brian Wilson, who Kaiser shadowed, explains in a recent article that the goal of the Principal for a Day program is to develop better relationships with the community and to bring business and community leaders into the school who can provide another perspective for the students at JHS. The business and community leaders who take on this role have the chance to interact with students and serve as role models.

Kaiser’s day and some of the duties he performed as principal are also described in the article. For his day to serve the students, Kaiser participated in giving the morning announcements and attended a gymnasium construction progress meeting. He was also able to speak with a senior class and crafted a special contest for the students to participate in. Students were to submit names of other students who they had witnessed performing random acts of kindness. The drawing was held at the end of the day and the prize of a candy-filled Christmas stocking provided by Kaiser was presented to the winner.

Kaiser, a JHS alumnus who has had two children graduate from the high school, says programs like these that involve the community are important since the school population reflects the community as a whole.

It seems that the students weren’t the only ones who benefited from the program that day. Principal Wilson says that the community leaders who take part in the program are able to gain insight into the innovative, successful and challenging programs at JHS.
