Atrazine is sprayed on corn and other crops and frequently runs off of fields and into waterways that are used as sources for drinking water.

The utilities department has received $110,466 from a $105 million fund that was established by the herbicide's manufacturer, Syngenta Crop Protection. The fund settles a class action lawsuit against the Greensboro, N.C., company that was originally filed in Illinois in 2004. More than 2,000 private and public water companies joined the suit, which expanded to other states in 2010.

"The City of Jasper, through its water utility, has constructed and maintained a cutting-edge water treatment system designed to protect and provide clean drinking water to its customers," Bingham Greenebaum Doll attorney Bill Kaiser, who represented the city utilities in the suit, said in a prepared statement. "This settlement will help defray some of the costs associated with the future maintenance of this system."
