BGD Awards First Annual Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship

04.05.2018

Bingham Greenebaum Doll has selected Myekeal Smith as the firm’s 2018 Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship recipient. Smith is a first-year law student at Indiana University Maurer School of Law and the first recipient of this annual scholarship.

Smith, who expects to earn his law degree in 2020, will join the firm’s Summer Associate Program in the Indianapolis office this May.

"I am truly honored to join Bingham Greenebaum Doll’s Indianapolis office this summer to work alongside, and be mentored by, some of the industry’s leading attorneys. I am looking forward to using my time at BGD to learn how to be a wonderful, reliable, and diligent lawyer from the best.

Being selected as the inaugural diversity and inclusion scholar is a humbling experience. I hope that the unique life experiences that I bring to the table serve to contribute to the professional atmosphere and reputation of the office. I also hope to demonstrate the value and necessity of having a diverse and inclusive business in this increasingly globalized market.

Representation matters; therefore, I hope that my work at BGD this summer serves as evidence to my younger siblings, and those who grew up in similar conditions to us, that a legal career is possible. I hope to one day use my resources to help others like me pursue the career of their dreams, by increasing access to lawyers, the legal system, and the prevalence of equitable opportunities.”

The BGD Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship is open to first-year law students who share the firm’s commitment to a diverse, open, and respectful culture where all perspectives and skills are valued.

“The Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship is an important part of BGD’s broader commitment to cultivating diverse and talented representation at our firm and an inclusive environment which fosters the success and growth of all our attorneys,” said Tonya Vachirasomboon, Chair of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee.  “Our recruiting efforts are only the first step.  We are thrilled to have Myekeal join us this summer.  He has demonstrated a history of academic excellence and great commitment to the community.  We believe Myekeal will be an outstanding addition to our Summer Associate Program.”

Prior to law school, Smith earned a Bachelors in Criminal Justice from Indiana University Bloomington where he was a Hudson and Hollands Scholar, a Groups Scholar and in 2013 was awarded both the Roberta Quant Memorial Scholarship and the Kiwanis Circle of Valor. He wrote two senior theses, “The Eradication of Violence in the Black Community: A Public Health Approach” and “African Americans and the Police – A Historical Cycle of Mistrust.”  Smith also spent a semester abroad in Canberra, Australia at the Australian National University and volunteered at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. As a law student, Smith volunteers with the Maurer Protective Order Project, which assists eligible clients with acquiring protective orders, and the Maurer Inmate Legal Assistance Project, helping incarcerated individuals with legal questions and research.

“BGD strives to build a diverse team of professionals that reflects the communities and clients we serve,” said firm Managing Partner Tobin McClamroch. “Myekeal has a strong academic background, but his commitment to community service deeply impressed me. The firm is delighted to welcome him as our first diversity scholarship winner.”

BGD is committed to creating an inclusive, respectful, and open culture made up of talented individuals of diverse backgrounds. We strive to sustain a work environment in which each individual’s perspective, background, skills, and abilities are valued. To achieve this mission, BGD is committed to hiring, retaining, and developing a diverse team of employees that reflect the various communities in which we work. We strive to create a climate of inclusion, grow our talent pool, and foster innovation and creativity.
