James A. Reed and Michael R. Kohlhaas are the first-place recipients of the Harrison Legal Writing Award for their article, "Family law issues concerning gays, lesbians and their children under Indiana law."

The Harrison Legal Writing Awards are presented to the top three articles published in Res Gestae from September 2006 through August 2007. The articles are judged on significance of subject matter; practicality and timeliness; quality of research and legal analysis; and clarity and style. The awards are funded by the ISBA Insurance Agency.

Reed is the founder of the matrimonial and family law practice group at Bingham McHale. He has concentrated his practice in matrimonial and family law cases since graduating from law school and has been involved in divorce cases with some of the largest marital estates in Indiana. Under his leadership, the private client department was organized to provide Bingham McHale clients access to the extensive experience of other attorneys and professionals in the firm who are highly experienced in retirement and deferred compensation, tax matters, partnership dissolution, real estate matters and other areas relevant to the division of property in relationship terminations. Reed serves on the boards of the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation and the Christel House charity.

Kohlhaas concentrates his practice primarily in the areas of matrimonial and appellate law, with a focus on the drafting and litigation of premarital agreements, and the dissolution of marital estates involving sophisticated valuation and complex marital asset division issues. Kohlhaas has represented a wide range of individuals, including executives, professional athletes, civic leaders, and other high-profile and/or high net worth individuals.
