Bingham McHale Partner James A. Reed Releases Guide on Divorce in Indiana

10.06.2011

Bingham McHale LLP is pleased to announce the launch of its latest guide, “Divorce in Indiana,” by partner James A. Reed and the attorneys of the Matrimonial and Family Law Group at Bingham McHale LLP. The guide outlines what divorcing spouses can expect and best practices to follow during the divorce process.

“Having been involved in divorce cases with some of the largest marital estates in Indiana, I know firsthand that a guide like ‘Divorce in Indiana’ is needed because of the prevalence of misinformation,” said Reed, founder of the Matrimonial and Family Law Group at Bingham McHale LLP. “This guide is designed to help divorcing spouses navigate the legal aspects of the divorce, as well as the personal aspects. In a divorce case, the legal and personal aspects cannot help but be intertwined.”

“Divorce in Indiana” provides divorcing spouses with an overview of the divorce process, including definitions of legal terms such as provisional orders, discovery and mediation. Reed and his co-authors also provide information for spouses on the division of marital property, and possible consequences based on the date of the divorce filing. This information can be especially important for business owners who may need to adjust their business succession plans or estate plans due to a divorce.

Reed also covers children’s issues from a legal and a personal perspective. “Divorce in Indiana” explains the differences between legal custody and physical custody, which are often not known to parents until the custody arrangements are being made. Reed’s guide also addresses what spouses should do if they suspect child abuse. He highlights the ethical considerations for children involved in a divorce, including best practices for parents and the importance of counseling.

“Divorce in Indiana” also outlines what a client should expect of his or her attorney, and what the attorney expects from the client in return. According to Reed, many clients are unaware of the time commitments and amount of research to be done on their end. The guide is designed to set those expectations up front in the hopes of saving the client time and money.
