Indiana’s Draft 2012 Impaired Waters List Available
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Office of Water Quality (OWQ) is preparing to update its List of Impaired Waters, as required by Section 303(d) of the federal Clean Water Act (CWA). Under the CWA, Indiana must assemble all readily available water quality data for use in assessing its waters for compliance with water quality standards (WQS). The state is then required to prepare and make public a list of those waters not meeting the WQS. The 303(d) List of Impaired Waters identifies the portion of the waterbody that is impaired; the pollutants causing the impairment; and a schedule for development of a total maximum daily load (TMDL).
The 2012 Draft 303(d) List of Impaired Waters (2012 Draft List) currently contains 3,404 impaired waters, while the 2010 List contained 3,146. The changes from the 2010 to the 2012 Lists include 1,107 delistings and 1,365 additions. More than 100 of the newly listed impairments were for E. coli.
IDEM will present the 2012 Draft List to the Water Pollution Control Board at its meeting on May 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Indiana Government Center in Indianapolis, Conference Room A. IDEM is soliciting public comment for the development of its Draft 2012 List, and will continue to take public comments until May 31, 2012. The 2012 Draft List and supporting materials are available online at http://www.idem.IN.gov/nps/2647.htm.
