A member of the firm’s Litigation Department and Deputy Chair of the White Collar Practice Group, Michael concentrates his practice in the area of criminal defense at both the trial and appellate levels. In addition to criminal defense, his experience includes civil and health care litigation, as well as the defense of professional licensure cases before various state licensing boards. Michael has conducted several internal criminal corporate investigations into allegations of environmental and health care related criminal activity. He has also defended False Claims Act and Whistleblower (Qui Tam) allegations, as well as assisted with search warrant, subpoena and Civil Investigative Demand responses.

After receiving his doctorate of law from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2001, Michael returned to his hometown of Indianapolis where he joined the law firm of Kiefer & McGoff. In 2004, Michael became a founding partner of Borland & Gaerte, P.C., where he practiced law prior to joining Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP. Throughout his career, Michael has served as a frequent lecturer in the area of criminal defense.

Michael is involved with several state and local organizations and is an active member of the Indianapolis Bar Association. Additionally, Michael serves as a board member for Nine13 Sports, which seeks to promote cycling as a means to curb childhood obesity.
